Local authorities

The Walloon Region is responsible for the organisation and operation of the communes and provinces. For example, it now appoints mayors and provincial governors. It is also responsible for general supervision (tutelle) and may also set up specific supervision.

The Federal Authority maintains certain competencies regarding local powers: the rules linked to linguistic pacification, voting rights for foreigners, the organisation and policy for police and fire services, the rules on public records, the pensions of staff and representatives, etc. Although the Walloon Region may change the New Communal laws, the guarantees granted to the residents of facility communes (including the nine communes of the German linguistic region) are governed by the Federal Authority.

It has been stipulated that the Walloon Region will transfer supervision of the communes of the German linguistic region to the German-speaking Community in 2005.

The Federal Authority or a Community may give a specific assignment to a local authority and organise specific supervision.
