The Walloon Region has legislative responsibility for policy on the environment and nature conservation. It also acts to implement this policy with the support of the communes. Environmental policy also includes water management and noise pollution standards.

The Federal Authority maintains responsibility for product standards, protection against ionising radiation, waste transit and the trade in non-indigenous species.

The Federal Authority and the Regions have concluded a cooperation agreement to set up a Coordination Committee for international environmental policy, which in particular determines environmental policy in international institutions and is also responsible for collecting the data to give to these institutions (for example in application of the Kyoto protocol).

The communes are responsible for public cleanliness.

The provinces can develop environmental protection initiatives, in particular by granting subsidies.
