The French and German-speaking Communities have legislative competence for education (including social promotion) and finance education organised by the Community and the education they subsidise in the corresponding linguistic region. They also act as the organising authority*.

The communes and provinces organise their respective education networks.

However, the Federal Authority has kept three competencies: setting the start and end of compulsory schooling, the minimum conditions for awarding qualifications and the teacher pension scheme.
