Employment policy is a shared responsibility of the Regions and the Federal Authority. The Federal Authority deals with all employment policies that require the application of one or more of its own responsibilities for implementation (taxation or social security).

The Federal Authority co-finances regional re-employment programmes. Labour law is the exclusive responsibility of the Federal Authority, as is supervision of observance of the applicable standards. Collective labour relations at a national level and male-female equality also come under the Federal Authority. Re-employment programmes for the unemployed in the administrations and departments that belong to the Federal Authority are also its responsibility.

The Regions deal with the placement of workers and the re-employment of the unemployed.

Cooperation agreements between the Federal Authority and the Regions are concluded for the implementation of employment policy.

For the German linguistic region, the Walloon Region has transferred its employment responsibilities to the German-speaking Community.

The Walloon region implements its competencies through the Forem (Walloon Region Employment Centre).

The German speaking community implements its competencies through the Arbeitsamt der Deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft (Employment Centre of the German-Speaking Community).
