The Walloon Region is responsible for foreign trade. The role of the Walloon Export Agency (Awex) is to develop Walloon exports.

Pursuant to a cooperation agreement between the Federal Authority and the Regions, a federal agency for foreign trade has been set up to organise joint trade missions and exchange information.

The Federal Authority has, however, kept a series of competencies: it may grant export and investment guarantees, and it is responsible for Belgian policy in international organisations, including the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in the framework of a cooperation agreement.

Since the special law of 12 August 2003, the Walloon Region has also been responsible for trade in arms and munitions, with observance of the criteria set forth by the European code of conduct in this respect.
