The Walloon Region is competent for town and country planning, including local road development, the acquisition, development and site facilities for the use of industry, craft industries and services, and other infrastructure to host investors, the renovation of derelict economic sites, land policy, monuments and sites (for the French linguistic region only).

The legislative provisions adopted by the Walloon Region are contained in the Walloon Town and Country Planning and Heritage Code (CWA-TUP).

The communes implement regional policy. In particular, they grant planning and building permits.

The Federal Authority participates in and subsidises urban planning projects through the special programme for large cities.

The Walloon Region has transferred responsibility for monuments and sites, including excavations, in the German linguistic region to the German-speaking Community.
