The Walloon Region is competent for agricultural policy: produce policy, prices policy, aid to agricultural companies, promotion, application of European measures, etc.

The Federal Authority remains competent for:
-   Safety in the food chain: standards on the quality of raw materials and products of a vegetable and animal origin, control of products of an animal origin.
-   Standards on the health and welfare of animals and their control.
-   Income-replacement measures for elderly farmers taking early retirement.
-   The Belgian Intervention and Restitution Agency for the distribution of European aid to the sector (the Regions are nevertheless represented in this organisation).
 
The provinces may play a role in agriculture by setting up promotional initiatives.

The representation of Belgium in the European Union in this respect is governed by a cooperation agreement.
